Before the fall of Iraq’s most renowned Dictator, Saddam Hussein, back in the 1990s, many people believed that Iran was the only other country of greater threat. They were wrong, of course, as there were several other Middle Eastern Regions of a much greater threat to both man and the world. They just didn’t know it.
Most notable of these ‘Red Zones’ were Syria and the rocky glades of Afghanistan, much-celebrated friends and allies to Russia and China, but all the same, they were no less a danger to foreign troops than those making the news. With those of The Taliban and other Freedom Fighters wrestling in wars and incursions of infiltration, it became the job of Special Forces to maintain Intel and, when needed, to eradicate the enemy. And so, when Saddam fell, there was no greater sign for these Factions (who blamed religion) to take their stand and spread fear around the rest of the world.
It was May 12th, 1987. More than five thousand allied troops had been stationed across the entire peninsula of Afghanistan in what was considered a brave and bold move by Russia’s leaders, while back home in Britain, politicians attempted to play down the maneuver. From those five thousand, just less than six hundred men loyal to their calling made it home.
This is the story of “The Black Jade Operation”.
